I did not have big dreams or grand visions in my head. My intentions were modest. One thing led to another and before I knew what had happened, Tenth Gate Center for Yoga and Meditation was born. It was more than I had planned on, but it all felt "right." We hired some amazing teachers who worked with us to create a community. We felt blessed.

A few years later, I began to realize that our beautiful Tenth Gate home had some basic needs that were not being met. The most important was parking...or the lack thereof. The lot was often full to capacity with restaurant customers. We would watch as frustrated students circled the lot, only to leave and head home. Although our lease stated that more parking spaces would be created, that never seemed to materialize.

The most difficult part was...I had become very attached to our beautiful little space at Old Almy. We had poured our hearts and souls into the place...and just about every cent we had. We loved it so much. The students loved it. How could we possibly move? How could we possibly find a space as beautiful? So many doubts and questions raced through my head.

Then one day I realized that this attachment to our current space was not serving me or the Tenth Gate community. Tenth Gate was not the building, it was the people and the teachings. Once that realization was firmly rooted in my mind and heart, I was able to let go of my attachment. And it seemed within a few short weeks after that, a great opportunity presented itself.

Lotus Studio close to completion.

A few hundred yards away from Old Almy Village was an old barn that needed a purpose. We met with the owner, David Hayes, who turned out to be our angel. It is because of his generosity and his understanding of our vision that we now are completing the renovations on Tenth Gate's new home. It is beautiful. Really beautiful. Each time I walk into this building I feel a sense of peace and enormous gratitude...and I have to pinch myself too. It reminds me of a passage in Rama Berch's book "Yoga in Every Moment." A yoga teacher said to Rama "You must be so happy to see all your dreams coming true." From Rama: "I laughed....I would never have dreamed this big!...I knew I would have limited myself so much, if it had been up to me. God has moved me far beyond where my puny mind would ever go." Ditto here.

It is also important to thank PJR Construction who has done an outstanding job with the renovation. Peter Raposa was incredibly organized (which I loved!), very friendly and accommodating and a pleasure to work with. The sub-contractors he brought in were equally reliable and did great work.

Our plan is to close Tenth Gate from December 25 though January 1 so that we may move into this new home at Glen View, 1046 East Main Rd. If all goes as planned, we are hoping to have an Open House on Monday, January 2. Classes are scheduled to begin Tuesday, January 3. We are also planning a blessing the weekend of January 14. More details on that later! I anticipate exciting times ahead!

Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training Underway

Hari Kaur and Reinette Fournier (Suraj Kaur)

Kundalini Yoga rocks. It really does. It's fun. It's crazy. It's transformative. And it elevates a person quicker than anything else I know. Yes, we're the ones who cover our heads, wear white and do a lot of singing, dancing, laughing and crying. Once you've been bitten by the magic, it is difficult to ever give it up.

When my husband, Tom, and I opened Tenth Gate three years ago, we weren't quite sure how the community would receive this relatively unknown funky form of yoga. Although ancient, it really had not found a home yet in Rhode Island.

Students started showing up as soon as we opened our doors. They were not only drawn to the physical exercises but fully embraced the spiritual side of the practice, which, among other things, promotes and encourages selfless service. We were constantly hearing, "This yoga has changed my life!" Students brought friends. Those friends brought more friends and family too. The Kundalini community continues to grow, and we are grateful for that. Tenth Gate is a very happy place filled with their sweet vibrations.

This past week, fourteen of our students began their first week of Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training (KYTT). It was an intensive led by my teacher, Hari Kaur Khalsa of Hari NYC, Inc. Hari was trained personally by Yogi Bhajan to train teachers and has completed over 45 trainings. She is, in my opinion, one of the best, and she proved that this past week. It was a remarkable 8 days. I watched as the light in our students' eyes got brighter. Faces began to glow and tears began to flow. Lots of laughter...and yes, singing and dancing too!

Thank you Hari for a great week. We look forward to having you back with us very soon!
Love to all,
Reinette

The attitude of gratitude is the highest yoga. —Yogi Bhajan

Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training Students

A Summer Solstice Experience

Tom and Reinette at White Tantric

It's July 4th. Tom (aka Parmatma) and I have been back from Summer Solstice Celebration at Ram Das Puri in New Mexico for a week now. Tom, with his boundless energy, keeps up with his practice and everything else going on in his life. He doesn't seem to miss a beat.

Me? I crashed. I have spent hours upon hours sleeping this past week. When I sit, I fall asleep. When I reach my bed at night, I immediately enter a deep slumber of vague dreams and then struggle mightily to wake up. I have been walking around in a quiet sort of peaceful, contemplative...and slightly confused daze.

At first I thought it was the result of lost sleep on the mountain. But then I began to realize it was more than that. I have heard from many Solstice friends who are experiencing this same kind of exhaustion. We did powerful work during White Tantric Yoga...fifteen 62 minute meditations in 2 1/2 days. I can not even begin to imagine the effect that will have on me and the 2000 other souls who shared this experience under the Tantric Shelter. I can certainly sense subtle and not so subtle shifts happening. I am understanding that much is going on within me as I sleep, and I have finally surrendered to that.

These Summer and Winter Solstice celebrations are highly regarded within the Kundalini Yoga tradition. Each year, people journey to Lake Wales, Florida for Winter Solstice Celebration, and then onto to Ram Das Puri in Espanola, NM for Summer Solstice Celebration. Winter Solstice is a smaller, cozier, more intimate affair with less harsh conditions. Summer Solstice is an entirely different experience. It's like going from the Bunny Slope to Black Diamond. Much more intense on almost all levels. Both, however, are amazing transformative experiences.

Tenth Gate Students Mary Mohler and Kyla Maher

Tom and I had never been to Summer Solstice before. It's not easy to leave our businesses. There is the expense of travel for two of us. Then the expense of boarding the dogs and finding substitute teachers to cover our classes, etc., etc. We had a million reasons not to go. However, after attending last year's Winter Solstice we knew that we had to go. Yogi Bhajan said, "Revolve your life around Winter and Summer Solstice and all will be taken care of." I feel the truth of that now. And I certainly felt the pull to go. It's the kind of pull that if you ignore the message, the Universe will proceed to slap you in the face. So we went. I can be stubborn, but I am not a fool. I have learned to heed the messages.

Everything about this Summer Solstice experience challenged me. The climate was brutal on my East Coast body. The winds were epic, one night reaching 50-70 mph. I watched my skin shrivel up like a raisin in the dry heat of the desert. I swore I would never complain about New England fog again! Then there was the dust and dirt that permeated every part of me, my clothing, my tent and my breath. My poor nose was wrecked! Breath of Fire was truly a breath of fire. The altitude made me gasp for breath as I climbed out of the valley every day. My emotions were all over the place, and I did my best to observe that without succumbing to a pity party. Fortunately I had two Tenth Gate students with me. Whining really was not an option. Neither was packing my dirty bags and heading east and jumping into the Atlantic...no matter how enticing that seemed.

White Tantric Yoga

We worked hard, slept little and ate more mung beans then I care to remember. Thank God for the super abundance of watermelon. Thank you watermelon cutters! I thought your Karma Yoga was an easy one. Ha! You worked so hard! Every Tantric break saw legions of yogis running to the dining tent, clamoring for that juicy, life-saving treat. I didn't care how the juice ran down my arms, turning the dust that was embedded in my skin into a sticky mess. I found myself marveling at that.

Really, after a few days, the dust, the heat, and all the other perceived discomforts no longer seem a big deal. You surrender to what is and then your senses start to pick up other, more important things. Like how radiant people are beginning to look. How beautiful the stars are in the desert. How gorgeous the sunrises and sunsets are. How moving early morning sadhanas are with so many gifted musicians singing together and lifting us up. How lucky we are to sit in front of wise teachers sharing the teachings and their love...making us laugh...making us cry. Everything just starts to feel okay. Better than okay. It feels real. And then the love starts to flow.

Yogi Bhajan said you have to put a stone under pressure to create a diamond. This is what happens at Solstice. We are put under tremendous pressure. Those words you hear so often in Kundalini Yoga, "Keep up and you will be kept up," took on greater meaning. We were living it and breathing it...along with the sacred dust of the desert. One thing is certain, I feel I can take on so much more now. I feel that the rough edges of me have been smoothed out a bit. I feel a more open heart. And now I find myself counting the days until we meet again on Ram Das Puri.

Guru Singh Waking up Camp (Lou Eu photo)

I extend my heartfelt thanks to all who made it an amazing experience but especially to Guru Singh. You are just plain awesome. Thank you for your love, support and guidance. One of my most favorite memories of Summer Solstice 2011? Being your tenting neighbor and hearing you tune your guitar at 2:15 am and then listening as you woke up the sleeping community with song:

Rise up, rise up sweet family dear
Time of the Lord and remembering His love is here
Love, love is all you'll say if you'll awake and rise up right away

The Lord will bless you, in so many ways
If you'll rise up right now and sing His praise

Hope to see you on Ram Das Puri in 2012. We'll be there.
Sat Nam,
Reinette (Suraj Kaur)

Powerful Teachings at Tenth Gate

Hari Kaur

It is a cold Saturday afternoon in April as I sit here at my desk contemplating these last few weeks. In that short span of time, Tenth Gate welcomed internationally known Kundalini Yoga teachers and authors Hari Kaur Khalsa and Guru Singh Khalsa along with Sufi teacher Sheikh Firdousi (Dr. John Wyrick) for classes and workshops that literally rocked our house! There's a big buzz around the studio these days about these three amazing teachers who have offered their love, wisdom, support and guidance in a powerful way with powerful teachings. More than once I heard, "I am never going to look at life the same."

Guru Singh

I have received countless e-mails from students expressing the impact of the teachings, asking for help with a daily practice, inquiring about meditations and kriyas, and expressing gratitude that these teachers came to be with them at Tenth Gate. I am seeing lots of bright and smiling faces. I am seeing an already beautiful community grow even more beautiful as they absorb the teachings and apply them in their classes and in their lives.

Sheikh Firdousi (Dr. John Wyrick)

The best part? As more images continue to surface, the enormity of the tragedy is overwhelming.

A few days after the earthquake and tsunami, I heard from one of our Japanese students who was back home. She let us know that she and her family were "okay," although worried, especially about the nuclear threat. She asked if Tenth Gate could help those who had lost so much.

This was another reminder of how small this world of ours has become. Yogi Bhajan, who brought Kundalini Yoga to the West in the late 60s, encouraged us to "Recognize that the other person is you." When you truly understand and embody that concept, it is impossible not to be of service. We need to help where we can. Not just talk about it. But do something about it. Offer help financially. Pray. Meditate. Be more conscious about how we care for this earth. There is so much more we can do....

Last Saturday, our beautiful Tenth Gate children wanted to discuss what was happening in their world. Our coming together as a caring community to help Japan is setting an important example for this next generation. And they want to help too.

We are currently in the midst of planning events to support our brothers and sisters in Japan. Although we still have a lot of work to do, this is what we have so far:

Friday, April 1 <span style="font-weight: bold;
Please register and pay at the studio.
A special thank you to Liz Dufresne for
donating her time and classes.

<span style="font-weight: bold; Each was interviewed and selected for this first of its kind program at Tenth Gate. Students presented us with their goals, and then we presented them with their own personalized sadhana (daily practice).

We meet twice a week for discussion, lecture and check-ins. They are receiving guidance from an Ayurvedic practitioner as well as the Tenth Gate staff. What we are now seeing are these beautiful souls bravely discovering who they are, what holds them back in this life and that there is a loving community to support them on their journey.

Students are reaching out to each other and to us with total honesty as to what they are feeling and the challenges they are facing. Tom and I are in awe of the caliber of these students. They have embraced the program, which includes rising in the Amrit Vela (before dawn) to do yoga and meditation. They are observing their daily habits and making changes. When one stumbles, another lifts them up in a loving, supportive way. They are an inspiration to us and to each other, and they are the foundation of this beautiful community at Tenth Gate. As I look at this photo of us, all I see is pure radiant light. I am so grateful that these beautiful teachers found their way into my life and form the foundation of our community.

We work very hard to stay true to our mission: to offer our community the tools to flourish in the years ahead. As we offer ourselves in service to this beautiful sangat, we also continue to improve ourselves so that the radiant light that emanates from this photo...continues to shine daily. As yogis and compassionate beings, we work diligently to be true to our word, to be present to the needs of those around us, to be loving and forgiving...and to enjoy all the challenges we meet in this life. And, just as importantly, not to take ourselves too seriously and to have lots of fun on this miraculous journey!

If you have not visited us yet, please do so. You do not have to be flexible, or thin, or have the latest fashion. We care nothing for that. We only care about who you are and what we can do to help you reach your highest potential in this life. Tenth Gate is a growing vibrant community. It is a peaceful sanctuary amidst the stresses of one's daily life. You will meet amazing people, make new friends and share in the joy of community.

Life is a flow of love. Enjoy!

YOGI TEA

Yogi Tea is health promoting, delicious and soothing. The benefits of Yogi Tea would fill pages. In the science of yogic foods the spices used are said to have the following properties:

Black pepper: blood purifier
Cardamom pods: digestive aid
Cloves: beneficial to the nervous system
Cinnamon: strengthens the bones
Ginger root: healing for colds and flu, increases energy

The milk in the tea helps in the easy assimilation of spices. A homeopathic dose of black tea acts as an alloy for all the ingredients, creating just the right chemical balance. When it’s done, strain it (you can freeze the spices and save to make another smaller batch another day) and pour into a jar or lidded pitcher. Then when you desire a cup, just add the milk of your choice, bring it to the boiling point, sweeten if desired, and enjoy. Plain Yogi Tea keeps refrigerated for several weeks.

Ingredients:
4 qts water
25 whole cloves
30 peppercorns
6-8 3-4 inch cinnamon sticks
25 green cardamom pods
3-4in gingerroot (scrubbed clean, not peeled) thinly sliced
1 tsp. black tea (or 1 tea bag), optional

Bring water to a fast boil in a stainless steel pot. Add whole cloves and let them dance for about 1 minute. Add peppercorns, cinnamon, cardamom and gingerroot. Turn heat down so it is just simmering, cover, and let lightly boil for 45-60 minutes. Remove from heat, add black tea, and let sit for another hour (or overnight). This way it gets nice and strong so you can best enjoy this potent spice blend! Then strain and refrigerate.

VARIATIONS:
Add 1 Tbsp. or more of Fennel seeds with the other spices. This will make the tea somewhat diuretic, and gives a nice sweet flavor.

Summer Cooler: Mix plain Yogi Tea with apple juice and serve with ice and a twist of lemon.

Yogi Tea Frappe: Blend plain Yogi Tea with milk of choice, a few ice cubes, sweetener. Top with a dollop of whipped cream if you like. Sprinkle with cinnamon powder. Absolutely divine.

Yogi Tea Latte: (requires espresso/cappuccino maker) Pour 1⁄2 cup Yogi Tea into cup and add sweetener and perhaps a few drops of vanilla flavoring. Now add steamed milk. Sprinkle with cinnamon powder.

Yogi Tea Smoothie: Place 1 cup Yogi Tea, 1⁄2 cup soymilk, 1⁄2 banana, 2-3 ice cubes, and 1 tsp. honey in blender. Process until smooth.

Yogi Tea “Icee”: Make sweetened Yogi Tea ice cubes (with or without milk). Put through ice crusher (or use blender to chop). I can't wait to see what he has come up with!

When we first opened Tenth Gate, I always made certain there were fresh flowers greeting our students and teachers. I would replace them two or three times a week, which meant running back and forth to markets. One of my teachers suggested I contact Richard to see if he could do a weekly arrangement for us. We have had beautiful orchids in Zen-like containers, we have had plexiglass tubes filled with lemons (!), we have had a Bamboo tree with lanterns, we have had skeletons with red carnations for Halloween, we have had limes, gourds...and all kinds of fantastic and delightful displays that always generate dialogue. Students and teachers look forward to this weekly arrival.

Richard's latest creation is our Thanksgiving Tree, where students write down what they are grateful for and hang this gratitude onto the tree. We all love it...and love to read what people have written. I know I have much to be grateful for...but at that moment I wrote down, "I am grateful for my Tenth Gate family," and "I am Grateful for Richard Ho."

RI Food Bank Fundraiser

All month we have been raising funds for the RI Food Bank and are now over $1,000. Bringing in our knowledge and experience with the transformational power of Kundalini Yoga, we have designed a comprehensive curriculum that will allow our students to take their practice deeper. We are only allowing 12 selected students to enroll in this program. As part of the intensive, we will be holding "Approaching Mastery" classes, which will take our students deeper into the teachings and will cover refining pranayam, asana, mantra and meditation techniques as well as dialogue on yogic philosophy. Each student will be given individual attention, a 40 day meditation designed for their goals, unlimited yoga, as well as an opportunity to share experiences within a supportive group. We will be working with Mary Guerenabarrena who will provide our students one on one coaching on Ayurvedic Lifestyle.

One of our goals is to teach our students about commitment and discipline. All check-in meetings and Approaching Mastery classes will be mandatory, and only those 12 students willing to make that commitment will be accepted into the program.

So if you are ready to take that next step in your practice...to devote your heart and soul into elevating yourself and further enriching your life...contact me at reinette@tenthgateyogacenter.com or call 401-683-9642 for an interview. For more information, go to our website and download the flyer.

Kundalini Yoga Intensive:
Becoming a Spiritual Warrior

Tom Speare, co-owner of Tenth Gate, serving up some of Reinette's birthday cake after the Kundalini Yoga Intensive.
